A unique property in Marshfield, MA, this contemporary home was built in 1979 and featured additions added throughout the years. It required some creative problem-solving to bring to life this client's dream of an open-concept, modern coastal design. The plan for renovations to the home included the kitchen, a dry bar with a pantry, reconfiguring the layout of the family room, built-ins for the living room, four bathrooms, a stone fireplace, and updating the staircase with custom-designed and built cable rail. A reconfiguration of the master bedroom and bath for more comfortable flow by removing walls and enlarging the shower. Flooring was added or refinished with white oak in a white wash finish to keep the coastal style throughout the home.

The kitchen island is finished with a custom-made birch shaker style which adds warmth to the space. The wood from the island was repeated by adding an accent to the hood vent. The birch reoccurs on the updated cable rail staircase to tie the spaces together. The backsplash of the kitchen mimics waves with texture to go along with the coastal views.

The desire to have an open concept kitchen and living area required removing a load-bearing wall and installing a complicated network of engineered beams. Removing the wall opened up the space to the sweeping views of Duxbury Marsh and allowed the space for the 10-foot island where friends and family convene. To create space for the walk-in pantry and dry bar while keeping the floor plan open, a wall was partially removed from the living room, and the bathroom was converted to a half bath.

Upstairs, three walls were moved to convert the former family room into the master bedroom, walk-in closet, reconfigured master bathroom, and created a hallway with better traffic flow to the family room. The former master bedroom, above the garage, was reconfigured to become the family room with the laundry room off the main hallway. The kids’ bathroom was also renovated to have a modern design that featured herringbone flooring. In the basement, the bathroom was renovated, and the flooring was replaced to give the family a more updated living space.
